Corruption scandal rocks Makerere University

Uganda has been hit by another scandal after an audit  in Kiira Motors reaveled more discrepancies and fund mismanagement. Kiira Motors is the project of Makerere University.
According to auditor report, more than Shs596 millions meant for Kiira Motors, has been mismanaged by the Centre for Research in Transportation Technologies (CRTT).
It was revealed that the money was not accounted for or were spent on mysterious deals according to the audit was done by Mr Walter Yonac Nono, the director of internal audit.

The report also indicates that Shs389.2 million was used to pay tuition for 12 students at top universities abroad without any students signing bonding agreement against public standing orders whic require a public officer going for a training to sign a bonding agreement with the sending organisation.
The report also added the the students were not contracted, in contravention of the law which requires beneficiaries of long training to be on permanent employment.
Another Shs27.3m in tuition and reading materials was paid out to individuals and not the awarding institutions making it difficult to account for the money.

The audit report also found that a lot of money was paid out to individuals working with CRTT instead of the company’s account.
Uganda was planning to start manufacturing cars in 2018 however this will not be realistic as the work at the site stall since 2015.
