Luwero court sentenced two criminal gangs to death by hanging

Luweero High Court has today  sentenced to death two men convicted for the gruesome murder of a police officer attached to Kasana Police post Luwero district  in 2015.
Ahamada Ssempala 24 and Erick Kirya, 33, residents of Luweero Town Council and Luweero Sub County respectively were on  convicted for the murder of Sgt Godfrey Bala by High Court judge Anna B. Mugenyi. However, seven of their co- accused were set free after prosecution failed to adduce incriminating evidence linking them to the offence.
They are Patrick Nsereko, Jimmy Kafeero, Isma Sserugo, Francis Nsamba, William Katongole, Isma Mafabi and Denis Ssebaga

Justice Mugenyi told court that prosecution had adduced evidence beyond reasonable doubt implicating Kirya and Ssempala who had been clearly identified by Ms Acan during two separate suspect identification parades as part of the group that killed the officer during the attack.
“You planned and premeditated the murder of a police officer on duty. In a bid to try and exonerate yourselves, you named other people who reportedly planned the attack to divert the investigation and your link to the murder. You gruesomely killed the police officer for no reason. Nobody has a right to takeaway the life of another person,” Justice Mugenyi said before sentencing the convicts.
The Defence lawyers led by Mr Brian Opolot unsuccessfully pleaded for a lenient punishment for the two convicts.

Justice Mugenyi told Court that the deceased police officer had a family and children to fend for.
“The pain and impact of losing a dear one is still felt by his family. You can appeal the sentence within 14 days,” Justice Mugenyi ruled.
